A Rooted Heart in an Anxious World

In a world where “breaking news” is constantly changing and demanding our immediate panic, finding a humble, rooted heart isn't just a quiet comfort—it is our only real anchor when the headlines scream fear. Grab your favorite cup of _______(fill in the blank) and come ground yourself in one of the most honest heart checks you will ever find yourself needing. I needed this heart check the most as I'm processing all that is taking place in the world right now. This is the reminder I needed this morning; I hope you find it encouraging as well.

Having access to so much information all at once, right at our fingertips, can be an amazing and beautiful thing. But left unchecked, it can also become a slow poison that leaves us distracted, anxious, and full of uncertainty. I don't know about you, but lately I’ve really found myself looking for the joy in-between the chaos of the headlines.

As creatures of curiosity, it’s completely natural to take the clickbait every once in a while and get lost down a rabbit hole of whatever everyone is arguing about today. Lately, though, I’ve had to pause and ask myself: *Is this something I actually need to let into my spirit right now?* Will an internet stranger's hot take on a celebrity really impact my day-to-day life? Probably not at all. It can definitely be fascinating to catch a glimpse into the life of someone society has labeled as important, mysterious, or having it all together. Sometimes it’s a gentle reminder that beneath the glamor, we are all human, deeply flawed, and reaching for joy. But if we aren't careful, peering into those lives can leave us feeling comparison-weary and lost. The turning point comes when we pause, say a quiet prayer for that person, and move on—remembering that no matter what status the world assigns us, we are all just God’s children in need of grace (and probably a good hug).

Then you flip the channel or scroll to the next post or reel, and suddenly it feels like the whole world is ending, especially when it literally says the world is ending. *Whew.* What a mess

All you wanted to do was check in to see if there was anything important you needed to be aware of, and within five minutes you’ve inundated your heart with a tidal wave of noise. Yes, it’s good to stay informed. But it’s far more important to remember that God already knows how every single headline will play out. None of this catches Him off guard. We spend so much energy trying to guess what tomorrow holds, while our Heavenly Father is already standing in it. How often do we bookmark an article or video to read or watch later, only to realize that five hours down the road the facts have shifted, the story is obsolete, and there’s already another red banner declaring “Breaking News”? When *everything* is treated as breaking news, it wears us out. No wonder our hearts can grow numb to the real people around us, or grow complacent about the actual world revolving right in our own living rooms. When tragedy strikes and systems shake, the collective instinct is to demand: *“How could they let it get this far?”* The fingers point, the blame gets tossed around, and everyone debates who is truly accountable.

Yet Galatians 6:4–5 gently calls us back to reality: “Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job well done, and you won’t need to compare yourself to anyone else. For we are each responsible for our own conduct.”* (NLT)

When you take an honest, humble look at what God has specifically placed in front of you—the work, the family, the boundaries you are truly responsible for in this exact minute—it becomes so much easier to let His promises speak louder than the headlines. The world outside may be crumbling and shaking like an earthquake, but your assignment hasn't changed. There is so much spinning outside of our control, but there is still so much sacred ground right in front of us to nurture, protect, and love.

Anchoring into H.O.P.E. When Headlines Shake

When the red "Breaking News" banners flash and anxiety threatens to steal our peace, we need an immediate spiritual reset to pull us out of the spiral. Use the H.O.P.E. framework to bring your heart back to center. Trust me, it works. You don't have to remember this perfectly for it to work. Find the one point that helps steady your heart and mind, and watch as your body relaxes and helps you stay in the moment of what you can truly do with what's in front of you.

  • H — Halt the Spiral: The moment a headline makes your chest tight or your mind race into worst-case scenarios, stop scrolling. Don't click the link; don't read the comment section. Take a slow, intentional breath and step physically away from the screen. Humble Yourself: Acknowledge your size before the Creator. The moment the world feels overwhelming, stop trying to manage, predict, or carry the outcome on your own shoulders. True humility says: “I am not in control of global chaos, but God is not caught off guard.” Step off the treadmill of needing all the answers and let God be God.

  • O — Observe the Root: Pause and name the actual fear hiding underneath the reaction. Ask yourself: “What am I truly afraid of losing right now? Is this headline threatening my sense of security, my comfort, or my illusion of control?” When you identify the root—whether it's fear of the unknown, powerlessness, or dread—you can stop treating the headline as the enemy and bring the worry straight to God. It's that exact relationship He is constantly inviting us back into over and over again. Seek Him.

  • P — Protect Your Peace and Purpose: Remind yourself that you do not owe every piece of outrage your energy, and guard your heart from growing cold or cynical. Filter what you allow into your mind through Galatians 6:4–5, refusing to let the world's collective noise hijack your peace or derail the specific calling, family, and daily assignments God has placed right in front of you.

  • E — Engage the Present: Bring your eyes back to your actual life. Step into the room you are standing in, notice the people right next to you, and pour your energy into the quiet, ordinary tasks God has placed right in front of you.

When the headlines are changing and creating panic and confusion, remember that God's messages have always stayed the same. Stay anchored. Stay humble.

Keep smiling, and hold onto hope.

XOXOXO,

Sarah Mae
